If a mobile subscriber removes the SIM for 2G or U-SIM for 3G from the MS, or turns off
the MS, the SGSN is informed of the deactivated state of the MS by the detach function.
This function can be used to delete a mobility management context (MM context) for an
MS in the SGSN, or to make the MS unavailable for mobile terminating requests in the
– (1) The MS sends a detach request to the SGSN. The detach type indicates which
type of detach is to be performed. ‘Switch off’ indicates that the detach is due to a
power switch off.
– (2) If ‘switch off’ indicates that the detach is not due to a power switch off situation,
the SGSN sends a detach accept to the MS.
The detach function may be invoked either by an MS-initiated request or by a networkinitiated
request (e.g., from the HLR). A network-initiated detach causes the deletion of
subscriber data in the SLR and the MM context in the SGSN. In all other cases the subscription
record is only marked as detached and may be re-used if a re-attach is required.
Upon receipt of a combined detach request from the MS, only a normal detach is processed.
No Gs interface interworking is started.
